Last Week’s Link Love: August 3

Whew! Thank god that week is over. I spent the bulk of it feeling as if I was catching up from my trip to Michigan. It wasn’t all bad, though. I found that this coming week marks the end of my stint as an on-site proofreader, I started filling in the gaps in a piece due 9/4, and I visited several charming wineries in North Jersey for another wine piece. One in particular — run by the cutest family ever — captured my heart. We started with a tasting (during which we kept being offered homemade cheesecake) and were then invited out back to the site of their small, winemaking operation. Owner Gene Ventimiglia then gave us a small lesson in winemaking, even offering to let us taste some of the wine in the barrels. After experiencing the best zinfandel that I have ever tasted, the family invited us to stay for their bbq, and even let us walk amongst the grape vines. Such a nice day!

And this is why I love story research.

10 Interview Tips From a Reporter Scared of Reporting

For the past few weeks, I’ve been working on an article that has required me to interview various luminaries in the NYC-based sex-positive world. This kind of thing always makes me…nauseous. I became a writer, after all, so that I could communicate with others while simultaneously remaining isolated. I even take medication for social anxiety.

PSA: Bazen Careerist Kicks Ass in a Brand New Way

Quite some time ago, I signed up for Brazen Careerist, a network for young professionals that allowed me to share my blog feed and connect with other awesome people like myself. (You may have noticed the little bookmarklet at the bottom righthand corner of my blog.)

Today, Brazen Careerist has launched itself in a whole new way.

Last Week’s Link Love: August 24

Oh you guys. I am sooo pooped. I got home at 1 a.m. last night after an 11.5-hour drive during which I was crammed into the middle back seat of a car between my mother-in-law and my sister-in-law.

I am cranky.

Anyways, last week’s installment of Link Love is going up late, because I was en route to Michigan this past Friday. Here you go:

Better Than Xanax

Way back in March, I wrote about pushing through periods of low motivation when it seems as if everything’s going wrong.

Well, August has been another rough month. My car got caught in a flash flood, and languished at an auto mechanic for two weeks. Then – just when I thought the car was taken care of — I had to replace the windshield. Paychecks were late, and bank accounts became dangerously low. I was forced to take an on-site proofreading gig to compensate for my low income levels.

Blech.

In my previous post, I wrote about how to remain productive, even when all you want to do is give up. But sometimes, powering through isn’t the best — or most healthy — solution.

Better Than Money

pennies1

My bank account has been scary-empty lately, yet I’ve been busier than ever before since taking on a regular proofreading gig and starting work on two new magazine assignments. The money will come…later…but, for the moment, it’s enough to be doing work that I love.

Link Love: August 14

I should be calling sources for a magazine story I have due in three weeks.

But gosh darn it, I’d rather be chatting with you.

Besides, 14-hour work days and car-related agita have left me too exhausted to handle work-related phone calls.  I find that during such calls, I feel pressured to be “on” in a way that’s not required when I’m just sitting here blogging in my pajamas. You know what I mean? I’ve been recharging after each phone call today by watching this past week’s DVRd episodes of The Tonight Show with Conan O’Brien. Obviously, work is moving slowly.

I still don’t feel quite ready to dive back in, so I fgure it’s the perfect time to present you with this week’s link love. Go to it!

When I’m Not Home…

The other day, I mentioned that I had agreed to an on-site proofing gig, on one condition: I would only go in for three half days a week, rather than three full days.

It’s amazing how big a difference a half day makes. I already feel a lot less overwhelmed, and have begun settling into a rhythm of nighttime blogging, a.m. article work, and afternoons at the office.

And, of course, there are benefits to this gig. Namely:

  1. money
  2. it forces me to leave the condo

Then again, there are things that I miss:

A Gig That’s Worth Your Time

make-me-happy

Last week, I found myself saying yes to a job I desperately did not want to do.

It was an on-site gig with full-time hours. The work was outside of my comfort zone. And the pay was not great. Even worse, despite being among people for the first time in awhile, I felt completely cut off from the contacts and the work that mattered to me.

Link Love: August 7

Lordy, lord, it’s been quite the week.

Since last Friday’s angst over my stalled career and my parents’ offer of a loan, things have been  little…crazy.

On Sunday, I got my car caught in a flash flood, which required that I climb repeatedly in and out of my car window like a character from Dukes of Hazzard. At the moment, I am still without a car, and unsure whether or not my car is a lost cause.

And on Tuesday, I inexplicably accepted an on-site proofreading gig that proved to be too much of a time commitment considering the rest of my work load, leading to a less than lovely Wednesday and Thursday.

So now here we are, at another Friday. God, that came quick, yet still felt unbearably long. This week’s link love:
