The other day, I participated in a book club gathering at my favorite local coffee shop. It was my first time, and I was nervous about inserting myself into a group of people I didn’t know, but they were discussing Barbara Kingsolver’s Animal, Vegetable, Miracle — one of my favorite books — so I couldn’t resist.
I ended up having a lovely time, and it made me think about the way I cover books here on Freelancedom.
I mean, writing a book review is all well and good. Â But wouldn’t it be way more fun to have a virtual book club discussion?
Books have been SO important to my development as a freelance writer and business owner. And I’m still learning. Which is why I have about 5 trillion business/writing books on my (ever-expanding) Amazon Wish List. Among them:
- Keith Ferrazzi’s Never Eat Alone
- Julia Cameron’s The Artist’s Way
- Kelly James-Enger’s Six-Figure Freelancing
- Julie A. Fast’s Get It Done When You’re Depressed
- Joy Deangdeelert Cho and Meg Mateo Ilasco’s Creative, Inc.
- Seth Godin’s Linchpin
- Laura Vanderkam’s 168 Hours
- Carol Roth and Michael Port’s The Entrepreneur Equation
- Mark Wiskup’s The It Factor
- Adair Lara’s You Know You’re a Writer When…
- Alan Weiss’s Value-Based Fees
How would you guys feel about having a once-a-month Freelancedom book club? We’d read a book, I’d post a review that contained discussion questions, and we’d have a party in the comments section. Wine and cheese optional (but strongly suggested).

It’s funny that you should write this post, and that I should happen upon it on Twitter. I’m looking for a book club to join. Like now! PLEASE include me in any future emails or tweets about your book club. I would LOVE to participate.
THANK YOU!!!
Yes yes yes! I’ll bring the wine. And more wine.
Oh, I’m so there.
I can’t say I’d be a permanent member of a book club as I prefer reading fiction, but I’d definitely join in for the month you read The Artists Way. I’m a fan of that book. I should say that you might want more than a month to read it though because the chapters are divided into weeks of steps/activities. I think it’s a 15 week program.
YA!! Excellent idea, Steph.
Of course! Many of those books are on my wish list too, and I would love to get a kick in the butt to read them. A book club is great motivation for me!
Yes. Sounds like a great idea. Keep me in the loop please.
Love this idea! I can’t guarantee that I’ll be able to finish the book each month, but I do love the concept. (And it’ll give me an excuse to read more, especially if I can get the ebook version.)
Do we have to sign up for the book club, or just participate when you post the questions and observations at the end of the month?
I am a member of a live book club for fiction that I look forward to attending every month. I’m excited to participate in a book club that focuses on non-fiction books that can help with my business. While I’m an avid reader, it is typically fiction. I know I should read more non-fiction to help with my business and professional life, so joining a book club like this will help!
Thanks!
Hey there Kristie – No signup necessary! All you have to do is participate in the discussion at the end of the month. Glad to have you join in!
Totally. I was asking myself how I missed this, then checked the date. I wasn’t part of the network May 11th. Yes. Yes.
